Every once in a while I get the opportunity to take over the care of a patient who has had chiropractic care since birth.

It’s a real honour and usually they have a great story of how they were introduced to chiropractic.

I want to share with you the story of John.

When John was a baby he suffered from colic. Colic is crampy abdominal pain in early infancy, sometime really severe. Remarkably it occurs in about 1 in 10 babies. An infant with colic is irritable, cries, and often has a rigid abdomen and draws up its legs.

What many parents don’t know is that colic responds wonderfully to today’s chiropractic.[ref]Klougart N, Nilsson N, and Jacobsen J: Infantile colic treated by chiropractors: a prospective study of 316 cases. JMPT, August 1989, Vol 12;4.[/ref]

John’s mom was at her wit’s end with frustration and worry about her infant son. In John’s own word’s “as a last ditch effort” my mom took me to a chiropractor. And again in John’s own words, “it was a miracle”

After a few adjustments he was fine.

Ever since that day, his mom took him and his brother to the chiropractor on a regular basis.

John is a firm believer in the power of today’s chiropractic. And for good reason.

He’s been away from chiropractic for a few years so his re-entry to my care was long awaited, and he’s getting great results. He was thrilled to fine a Kelowna chiropractor who could do good work for him.

In fact I went over his x-rays this week with him and he’s almost at the point where his x-rays are completely restored. He was shocked how quickly it came back.

Memory is the key

With John, like many people who had chiropractic when they were growing and developing, his spine and nervous system had a proper memory of what his posture should look like. His brain contained a “road map” of what his posture should be like and it was an accurate representation.

Others are not so fortunate.

Most North Americans have no “proper memory” to return to, so as chiropractors, not only are we restoring their spine and nerve system to normal, we need to establish proper memories of what their posture should look like.

I explain it to my patients this way. If you were to memorize your math facts wrong in grade 3, 4 and 5 it would be more work to re-learn those math facts later. It’s easier to do it right the first time.

Like the quote from Dr. Milton Shelton, it’s easier to educate the un-educated than re-educate the mis-informed.

Most people think chiropractic is about the bones and the muscles.

Most people think chiropractic fit’s more in the “fitness” camp, like massage or physiotherapy but it actually fits in the neurology camp.

Remember your chiropractor is a doctor, not just a therapist.

And you’re feeling like your chiropractor is just behaving like a therapist, know that there are awesome chiropractors out there that have studied hard to gain your trust. Don’t settle for less.

All that extra schooling and study is for a reason.

Working with the nerve system is incredibly complex and your doctor of chiropractic is working to restore your nerve system to function at it’s best, not just rehab a broken down joint or relax a muscle.

John’s earlier neurological “memory” of better posture helped him get back to correction faster then most, now we just need to keep him there. The hard work is done.

There is ample evidence that chiropractic families are healthier and happier with their results in a chiropractic paradigm then families that don’t utilize chiropractic.[ref]According to the 1994 Harris Poll, patients were more satisfied with chiropractic care than care from medical doctors and other health care professionals.

Those who sought care from a chiropractor were more likely to be very satisfied with their care than those who visited any other practitioner. (Choices were between Chiropractic Doctors, Medical Doctors, Physical Therapists, or Osteopathic Doctors) Of those who have seen both types of practitioner, the majority were more likely to be satisfied with the care of the chiropractor than with that of the medical doctor.[/ref][ref]Patient Evaluations of Care from Family Physicians and Chiropractors. Cherkin, D., MacCornack, F. Western Journal of Medicine – 1989;150:351-355.[/ref]

And the reason is because when you look after your nerve system your body is ready and willing to heal faster and perform better. That makes for healthier and happier people.

John was one of the fortune one’s who had a parent that understood chiropractic, and now he is enjoying the benefits years later.

Raising kids in a toxic and stressful environment

There never has been more “stress” in the world, whither it’s emotional stress, chemical stress or physical stress. And it all effects the nerve system. Poor posture is just another indication of our cultural slide towards poor health.

You don’t need to go down with the ship.

Today’s chiropractic is a solid strategy to help you and your family regain lost health and keep it.

The best thing you can do is find an up to date chiropractor in your area and get yourself and your kids in for a check up.

This goes for if you’re in pain or not. Just get checked to see what’s going on with your spine and nerve system.

We can help. Neurological based chiropractic can change your health.

If you are tired of health strategies that are just scratching the surface: if you want true, authentic, inside out healing, then todays chiropractic is for you.
