My introduction to chiropractic and why I chose this profession. . . if you want the short version scroll to the bottom, if you like stories then read on:)

My first experience with chiropractic wasn’t fun. I injured my back goofing around with my buddies in high school. It wasn’t getting any better so my mom took me to our family doctor. After two weeks of medication and laying on a heating pad, my back pain was worse and on top of that, my leg was starting to scream at me at night. Small town Ontario in 1985 wasn’t super forward thinking, so the only chiropractor in town was on most people’s “avoid at all cost” list.

Meeting Doc McCallum

My mom finally had enough of me hobbling around like I was 80 and she took me to see doc McCallum (the chiropractor).

I had no idea what chiropractic was about and old doc McCallum didn’t seem to care that I was clueless about what he was about to do to me.

The next thing I knew, he laid me down and jumped on my back. It totally freaked me out. My spine made this wild cracking sound. I didn’t think that was supposed to happen, but doc McCallum didn’t seem phased. I really thought he paralyzed me!

He said, lie still for a few minutes and then get up.

So I did what he said and when I got up my leg pain was gone. My back was still angry but it did seem better than before the giant “crack”. I couldn’t believe it.

He said come back in a couple days and we’ll see how you’re doing.

At the end of the week, he “cracked” me again and he said I was all good. And you know what? He was right, my back and leg felt great. So much for pain killers and heating pads.

Not learning from my mistakes. . .

Much to my mom’s frustration, I went back to my foolish ways.

As I headed off to university to begin my undergrad, that crazy chiropractic experience never left me. After something so simple, how was it possible that I felt so great?

When I was back home for reading week I stopped in to see doc McCallum to ask him more about this profession he dedicated his life to. Three years later I walked through the door of Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, the same school Dr. McCallum graduated from in 1945.

Moving cross country to start again

Fast forward a few years and my wife, Jan and I discovered the Okanagan, sold everything in Ontario and moved our family of 5 across the country. In 2009 we opened Lighthouse Chiropractic, and expanded in 2018 to Lighthouse Chiropractic and Integrative Health.

I’ve always been an education nut. After graduating from chiro school, I continued by studying three more years of sports chiropractic, then discovered Chiropractic BioPhysics®, the most advanced spinal corrective technique that chiropractic has ever seen.

A new generation of chiropractic with CBP

Chiropractic BioPhysics® or CBP® is the protocol of choice for elite chiropractors who look to spinal rehabilitation and postural correction as means to address not just pain and disability, but to optimize function and neurophysiology. I am one of only a handful of certified biophysics doctors in North America.

A long way from old doc McCallum’s office in small town Ontario.

Advanced spinal conditions

I work with all kinds of people, but because of my more advanced training, I do see more complicated conditions like scoliosis, degenerative arthritis, neuropathy (nerve pain into the arms and legs) and spinal stenosis. I often work in collaboration with other health specialists to manage your spinal condition and avoid spinal surgery and disability.

As a CBP doctor, I utilize both manual and instrument mirror image adjusting, three dimensional in-office spinal traction and the most researched and advanced home care exercises and home spinal orthotics developed.

Teaching and research based office

In fact Lighthouse is a research and teaching facility to.  Our current study with UBC is looking at the link between today’s chiropractic and improvements in human immune response. In the past I partnered with Carleton University in Ottawa to improve patient/doctor communication. Maybe that came from my “non-communication” experience with doc McCallum? I’ve even won some awards for my research in the field of x-ray excellence. Moving healthcare forward is incredibly important for me.

Hospital grade diagnostics and world leading technology to ensure an accurate diagnosis and care plan

We have in-office hospital grade, digital x-ray and the most researched digital postural analysis software in healthcare today.

As I mentioned, it’s a long way from old doc McCallum’s office in small town Ontario.

So if you’re looking for top notch professionals who are compassionate AND competent then I think you’ll be happy at Lighthouse. If you’re curious about how your health and lifestyle can improve with today’s chiropractic or if you’ve “given up” on getting better please reach out to my team. They can schedule a quick phone call with me or a brief consultation in my office to see if I can help. If not, I won’t waste your time. But just imagine, if we could help and your pain and disability could be put in the past? It might take some work but I think everyone deserves great health.

Summary: short version

Dr. Jenkins studied at the University of Western Ontario in London Ontario for his biology degree. His field of study covered genetics, biochemistry and advanced cellular biology. Not the “normal” route to a doctor of Chiropractic. He then went on to study at Canadian Memorial Chiropractic in Toronto, received the Erica J Langer award for research excellence and then went on to study a further 3 years of Sports Chiropractic.

Even after his formal education was completed he continues to work in practical clinical research to promote the benefits of chiropractic for all.

After practicing for 14 years Dr. Jenkins sold his private practice in Ontario and moved to the beautiful Okanagan.

From 2012 to 2017 Dr. Jenkins worked in conjunction with Carleton University (Ottawa, Ontario) advancing the development of patient/doctor communication. Currently Dr. Jenkins is conducting a clinical study with UBC Okanagan to measure the impact spinal and neurological correction has on human immune response. This research is funded by the Australian Spinal Research Foundation and in conjunction with US based research organization, Chiropractic BioPhysics NonProfit.

Dr. Jenkins opened Lighthouse Chiropractic in the Landmark District of Kelowna in 2009 and expanded to welcome massage therapy, kinesiology and facial stretch therapy in 2018. His goal at Lighthouse is to provide effective, scientific and evidence based care to the Okanagan and the surrounding communities.

His personal mission is to educate and inspire as many families as possible to live full, active and long lives. He is the creator of the 100+Living Plan and teaches the principles of how healthy neurology leads to longevity and superior health.

In addition to coaching and mentoring chiropractors, massage therapists and other health professionals, he speaks to corporate groups, municipalities and non profits on how to deal effectively with stress and maximize life and health.
